The event, which attracted over 1,000 participants, centered on creating a community of global citizens to combat human trafficking, starting with their own neighborhoods.  The commemoration, included a keynote speech bu UNODC Executive-Director Antonio Maria Costa, and featured a screening of Julia Ormond's documentary on modern-day slavery, Hidden in Plain Sight, as well as a panel engaging practitioners, political leaders, and members of the business community on how to tackle the egregious problem of human trafficking.   New York Times Pulitzer Prize Columnist Nicholas Kristof moderated the discussion, which highlighted stories and solutions from the field.  Panel participants included distinguished individuals such as Ambassador John Miller, Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons of the U.S. State Department; actress and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on Human Trafficking, Julia Ormond; Ruchira Gupta,  Executive Director of Apne Aap Women Worldwide; New York Congresswomen Carolyn Malony; and Marilyn Carlson, CEO and Chairperson of Carlson Companies.
