UNODC trains Iranian Customs K9 units
despite the COVID-19 pandemic

Tehran, 31 May 2020 – The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in cooperation with the Drug Control Headquarters successfully arranged for delivery of three fully trained drug detecting dogs to K9 Centre of the Iranian Customs anti-narcotic unit which continued with four weeks of specialized training for handlers and the dogs.

Considering the current COVID-19 pandemic situation in Iran, UNODC designed the training sessions with combination of practical and online training sessions as well as observing social distancing. This activity aimed to familiarize the K9 handlers with basic and essential information on dogs’ physiology, healthcare and body language as well as training both dogs and handlers on search techniques for discovering of hidden concealments. The trained handlers and their dogs will be stationed in different Customs border units around the country to conduct effective anti-narcotic search on trucks, containers and cargos passing through the legal entry points in Iran.

The dogs being procured under UNODC Iran Sub-programme 1 activities were trained on basic obedience and the searching skills in the origin. In addition to providing complementary specialized training to the dogs and matching them with their handlers, this training, held in Tehran, contributed to increasing both theoretical and adopted practical knowledge of the Iranian dog handlers in the Customs K9 Centre.

The event was organized as part of the activities foreseen in the framework of the Sup-programme 1 “Border Management and Illicit Trafficking” of UNODC Country Partnership Programme (2015-2020) for the Islamic Republic of Iran through the generous donation of the Government of Japan.
